What is engine cold testing?

An engine cold test is a form of end-of-line engine testing, performed while the engine is “cold”, or not running, which means there is no gasoline or special ventilation required—this makes for a simpler, more cost-effective test. Instead, the test is done using an electric motor to rotate the crankshaft. During this process, sensors monitor operations, including torque, crankshaft angle and pressures, to ensure proper functioning in conditions that mimic actual function in the field.

  • Mechanical system
  • Oil system
  • Fuel system
  • Ignition system
  • EGR valve
  • Sensors
  • Noise and Vibration (NVH)

Sciemetric’s Engine Testing Solutions for Manufacturing

At Sciemetric, we know engines inside and out. It’s where we started in manufacturing in the early 1990s when we pioneered digital process signature analysis for in-process defect detection, creating the industry’s first engine cold test application for a V8/V10 engine line. Today our systems and turnkey solutions for ICE Powertrain ensure the quality of millions of engines every year, around the world. The effectiveness of our solutions rely on the following pillars:

Monitor critical-to-quality processes on the engine manufacturing line—before EOL!

As opposed to solely testing engines at the end of the line, our approach is to monitor each critical process in the manufacturing of your engines implementing tests earlier in the assembly process to reduce failure rate at cold test station. Monitor virtually any manufacturing process on the engine manufacturing line, including:

Deeper insight, greater accuracy in engine testing using Sciemetric’s technology

The engine cold testing method is enabled by Sciemetric’s process monitoring system—powered by our digital process signature technology. By comparing waveforms with those of known “good” engines, the system quickly identifies and pinpoints defective processes, rejecting abnormal or substandard engines.
